As early as 1924, well before the phrase ‘corporate social responsibility’ had been coined, our founder, Dewan Bahadur A.M. Murugappa Chettiar, started the first AMM Hospital. Nearly three decades later, the Group formally institutionalised its CSR responsibility through the establishment of the AMM Charities Trust (renamed AMM Foundation). Over the decades, the Foundation has been extensively engaged in eco-conservation, public health and education initiatives in the communities of its operational presence. The Foundation now manages four schools, a polytechnic college and four hospitals.

The Foundation runs the following educational institutions :

  • Murugappa Polytechnic College, Avadi, Chennai
  • Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Higher Secondary School, Ambattur, Chennai
  • Vellayan Chettiar Higher Secondary School, Tiruvottiyur, Chennai
  • TI Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ambattur, Chennai
  • AMM Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kotturpuram, Chennai

Some of the scholarships offered by the Foundation are

  • AMM Arunachalam-Lakshmi Achi Overseas Scholarship
  • AMM Murugappa Chettiar Centenary Scholarship
  • MR Valliammai Achi Centenary Fund

The healthcare institutions that enjoy the patronage of the Foundation are

  • AMM Hospital, Pallathur
  • Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital, Avadi, Chennai
  • Valliamai Achi Hospital, Kadayalumoodu, Kanyakumari
  • AMM Arunachalam Hospital, Nellikkuppam

It has been the focus of the Foundation to engage in research-led initiatives that can take society forward. With this vision, the Group commissioned the Sri AMM Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre (MCRC) to drive science and technology applications for rural development. The Centre focuses on the responsible use of simple, locally available materials to create commercially viable products and improve rural lives. MCRC works in areas like non-conventional energy, ecotechnology, food and nutritional supplements, plant tissue culture and organic agriculture, among others.

The Murugappa Group’s sustainability philosophy covers its environment commitment as well. As a result, it is not perceived as an optional expense but a necessary investment that enhances competitiveness. Over the years, the Murugappa Group has invested in clean practices and processes, often extending beyond prevailing statutory requirements. For more information, visit www.ammfoundation.org
