Kakinada, Aug 25, 2013: As part of its concerted efforts to improve the availability of medical facilities to the general public in Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, Coromandel International Limited, India’s leading Phosphatic fertilizer manufacturer, has decided to contribute 65 Lakhs for carrying out repairs and renovation of the building and procurement of life-saving equipment for the Pediatric Block of the historic Government General Hospital, Kakinada.
Mr. Kapil Mehan, Managing Director, Coromandel International Limited has handed-over the letter confirming the contribution for the Hospital to Ms. Neetu Kumari Prasad, District Collector, East Godavari (AP) who is also the Chairperson of the Hospital Development Society, in a function held in the hospital premises on Wednesday, the 27th Aug 2013.
The 150 year old Kakinada Government General Hospital, the major health services provider to the people of both East and West Godavari districts, has been experiencing tremendous growth in demand for advanced pediatric services. Thousands of sick children and premature born babies are being treated here every year. The donation of Coromandel International Limited will be used for purchase of 4 number of ventilators for Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and conversion of old Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) into Pediatric General Ward besides development of infrastructure and provision of key amenities in the Ward. In response to the Company’s generous gesture, the hospital authorities have voluntarily come forward to name the Pediatric block as “Coromandel Pediatric Ward“
On this occasion, Mr. Kapil Mehan stated – “It is our hope that this contribution will alleviate the health of premature born babies in the vicinity of Kakinada. Development of the Pediatric Ward will benefit many children who need medical facilities and attention. We believe that healthy and happy children are a best guarantee for a brighter future for us.”
Mr. A Vellayan, Chairman, Murugappa Group, termed the contribution as a demonstration of the Group’s resolve to support institutions that share common objectives with the government in addressing the healthcare issues. He further stated – “We are committed towards social development and health of our neighbors. Our efforts for the inclusive growth include CSR programs in the areas of community development, education, environment besides health. We are planning for some more health care projects in the State”.
Mr. K. Kanna Babu, MLA (Kakinada rural) commended the Company’s gesture and opined that the same will enable the hospital to improve and continue to provide the most advanced health services to the sick children.
Ms. Neetu Kumari appreciated the generosity of Coromandel and hoped to improve the pediatric health services delivery in the hospital. She assured that the hospital will utilize the contribution effectively.
Senior executives of Coromandel International Limited Mr. Amir Alvi, Mr. Arun Leslie George and Mr. Sankara Narayana Moorthy and Dr. P. Venkata Budha, Superintendent of the hospital, RMO and Heads of various departments of the hospital have attended the function.
About the GGH, Kakinada
The history of Government General Hospital, Kakinada dates back to the year 1856, when a civil dispensary was started in Jagannaickpur village under a committee of management. The dispensary was taken over by the Municipality in 1871 and gradually a hospital came into being consisting of scattered huts. This hospital was a gift of the Maharaja of Pithapuram. It was opened by His Excellency Lord Ampthill, the then Governor of Madras on 4th December of 1903. The government took over the hospital in September 1926. Several departments and Wards were added over the years.
In 2001, the Government of Andhra Pradesh decided to establish Hospital Development Societies (HDS) in all the Government General Hospitals of teaching medical colleges. As a part of this measure, the HDS, Kakinada was formed with 15 members. It started collecting user charges for all the services rendered at the hospital.
About a decade back, the Paediatric Emergency Services Ward was inaugurated in which the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were included. In 2002, two Paediatric wards were constructed and the existing ward was renovated.
The hospital has 890 beds and provides medical care to people belonging to East and West Godavari Districts.
