Chennai, 11 September July 2016: Ten days of on-ground action at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai, culminated in seventy minutes of non-stop attack and defense in the Final match between defending champions Indian Oil Corporation and Indian Railways. After many near-misses and hard-fought attempts at the goal, the Indian Railways team were crowned Champions of the 90th MCC Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament. They scored 2 goals against defending champions Indian Oil Corporation’s 1 goal.
The match seemed to be a fight among equals right up to the half-time with one goal to each side, after which the competition got hotter by the minute. At the 60th minute, with just ten more minutes to go, Kush JP of the Indian Railways team scored the second goal. The next ten minutes were spent with the IOC team trying to break into the strong defense put up around the Railways goalpost.
As the winning team, Indian Railways takes home the prize money of INR 5.00 lakhs, and the runner-up team Indian Oil Corporation receives INR 2.50 lakhs.
In addition to the above team prizes, the following individual awards were also given away to the top performing players. Each of these players were given a high-end bicycle from TI Cycles and cash prize of INR 10,000.

The Final match was a well-attended affair, with Mr. A Vellayan, Executive Chairman of the Murugappa Group giving away the awards to the players and the officials. The Madras Cricket Cub was represented by the Vice President MrDhananjaya Das, Hony Secretary Mr R Ramesh, Hony Treasurer Mr B Vijay
Kumar, Organising Secretary Mr CN Shanmugham and others. Past Olympians, sports enthusiasts and hockey aficionados cheered the teams from the stands.
