Chennai, 2 August 2012: The second edition of the Murugappa Madras Quotient Quiz will be conducted on 1 September 2012 in Chennai, and will be anchored by the renowned quizmaster Dr Navin Jayakumar. Aimed at school students from class 5 to 12, this quiz will have a written preliminary round followed by a grand finale, with prizes worth more than Rs. 1 lakh to be won. There will also be audience rounds for the general public to participate and win prizes.
Announcing this at a press conference today, Mr Sridhar Ganesh, Director – HR, Murugappa Group, spoke about the values of the Murugappa Group which embodies Integrity, Passion, Quality, Respect and Responsibility. “The underlying spirit of inquiry and the pursuit of new opportunities and the capability has always been part of the Group’s Alchemy. We see the Quiz as part of this quest – the spirit of knowing and winning is built on similar foundations”, he said.
Mr Sridhar Ganesh also said “In 1989 when Madras was celebrating its 350th birthday it was only appropriate that the business entity with the longest association with the city be a part of it. That was how the Madras 350 Quiz was sponsored by the Murugappa Group. It was one of the grandest quiz shows ever, spanning four whole days. In 2011, when the chronicler of the city Mr. S Muthiah mooted the idea of re-starting the quiz, it was natural for the Murugappa Group to be associated with it again. This year onwards, we propose to have the Murugappa Madras Quotient Quiz on the first Saturday of September. The event for this year will be held on Saturday 1 September 2012”.
Elaborating on the format of the quiz for this year, the well-known Quizmaster Dr Navin Jayakumar said that this year will also have a written preliminary round followed by the grand finale. The Finals will comprise three sections, ‘Madras Past’, ‘Madras Present’ and ‘Madras Forever’. There will be several audience rounds for the general public with exciting prizes, with questions to be answered by SMS, tweets and live quizzing. He also recounted that the 2011 edition of the quiz was a well-contested one with a very exciting final round. The last year’s edition had 96 teams participating, and a wider range of audience viewing it live online.
Well-known historian of Chennai Mr. V Sriram spoke about how the erstwhile Black Town area of Madras slowly transformed into one of the most densely populated and active commercial hubs of the country, and the significant part played by the Murugappa Group, and the Parry House and Dare House buildings in the area. “The significance of the building was so well-known and acknowledged that this part of the city itself became known by the name of what was a commercial establishment”, said Mr Sriram.
