Mr.A.Vellayan, Chairman, Murugappa Group said,
“Our vision for Cycling in India is to help make the shift
from cycles primarily being used for commuting, to cycling being a recreational
activity. In the United states, 60% of cyclists are recreational whereas in
India 98% of them are daily commuters. This transition will help reduce our
country’s burden with regard to oil imports and will offset our carbon
footprint.
In this regard I would like to thank the citizens of Delhi in
taking the initiative to help carry forward the cycling movement. We have had an
overwhelming response in your city with over 5000 thousand participants and we
hope this is the start of India’s journey towards becoming Faster, Fitter and
Greener”
Mr L.Ramkumar, Managing Director, Tube Investments of India
said,
“The Murugappa group takes an active role in promoting
sports in India. We have been sponsoring The Murugappa Gold cup Hockey
tournament in chennai and the Chennai Tennis Open which attracts the best
players from around the world. Now we are promoting cycling and encouraging
sportspersons involved in cycling through these cyclothons. We believe with
support from the government we can develop world class sportsmen and sports
women to successfully represent India in International cycling events. I would
like to take this opportunity to urge Governments like the Government of Delhi
to aid in the process of creating better infra structure for cycling. The
benefits of cycling is that it immensely helps enhance the environment. A major
environmental concern is global warming, cycling helps reduce carbon emissions
which contribute to global warming. Road traffic is a major source of pollution,
whereas cycling surely helps in reduction of health threatening pollutants in
the air. This would definitely be a strong step in the direction of reducing the
carbon footprints from the planet.”
Dr.D.Raghuram, President, TI Cycles of India said,
"TI Cycles of India is happy to bring India’s biggest
mass mobilizing cycling event the BSA Hercules India cyclothon 2010 to New
Delhi. The Cyclothon is an innovative and fun way of creating environmental
awareness, and educating people on how to reduce pollution levels and make our
cities cleaner and greener places to live in.
Last year we had an overwhelming response to our BSA Hercules
cyclothon editions in Bengaluru and Mumbai where people across age and economic
strata participated in numbers in excess of 6500 at each of the locations. This
shows that urban adults and children alike have a latent desire to experience
the joy of cycling in our metro's.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of
Delhi for giving us an overwhelming response to the BSA Hercules India Cyclothon
Delhi. The people have come forward and demonstrated their enthusiasm for experiencing the outdoors on a cycle. To support green
modes of commuting, cycling as an option for fitness and with improved
infrastructure for cycling people may be encouraged to cycle to work as well.
This will save our nation foreign exchange through reduced oil imports and
reduced pollution in our ever growing metros.”
Satish Menon, CEO of Sport18 said,
"Cycling as a movement
is picking up in India. After Bengaluru and Mumbai, the event is taking the next
important step by integrating the capital city into this movement and we invite
the citizens of Delhi to come and experience the wave of BSA Hercules India
Cyclothon”
A similar partnership at local levels with the government can
definitely help improve the quality of life in our cities without the need to
spend heavily in building large infrastructures to manage traffic.
The event will also showcase the best of Indian talent in the
field of cycling. The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) is extending its full
support in the organization of the mass mobilization rides across various
categories.
