Murugappa firm to spread to China, Dubai

$1.2-billion Murugappa group's flagship company Carborundum Universal
Ltd (CUMI) is looking at setting up manufacturing bases in China and
Dubai in the next four to six months.
The abrasive major doesn't rule out acquisitions in
the coming months. CUMI produces over 20,000 abrasive products for
bearing, automobile and cutting tool industry.
''We are seriously looking to set up base in China
as a sourcing centre as well as to supply to auto ancillary MNCs,''
said Ramesh Agarwal, MD, CUMI. Agarwal said the company is looking
at China as a low-cost option to produce niche products and Dubai
as an entry point to access West Asian markets. ''It is early to
talk about the scale but we are serious about venturing into China,''
he added. CUMI is strategising to position globally in abrasive
and ceramics market. ''Our vision is to place CUMI on the global
map in material science and its application".
The initiatives on China and Dubai are in line with
this objective,'' said M M Murugappan, chairman, CUMI.
He said the company has fixed a target of upping exports
to 20 per cent of the turnover in 3 years from 10 per cent. CUMI
has already expanded to US and Australia.
The company has drawn up an investment plan of Rs
30 crore a year over the next 3 years in equipment and skillsets.
CUMI's clients include Maruti Udyog, Hero Honda, Eicher,
Shriram Pistons, Munjal Showa among others.
