Abrasives
Abrasives are products used for material removal, polishing and finishing across a variety of applications. They find application in a host of industry segments, the principal being fabrication, automobiles, auto components, construction, woodworking and general engineering industries.

Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) manufactures 20,000 varieties of coated and bonded abrasives, super refractories, electrominerals, besides industrial ceramics and ceramic fibres.

Abrasives (bonded abrasives, coated abrasives and allied products) constitute the company's largest business segment, contributing 72 per cent of revenue in 2005-06.

Bonded abrasives
Mainly available as grinding wheels, its applications range from metal removal to finishing. User industries comprise automobiles, construction, fabrication, steel and bearings etc.

Coated abrasives
Mainly used in light polishing applications, coated abrasives' principal use is in the Building and painting, automobiles, white goods, tannery and plywood industries. Other coated products comprise scrubber pads, sandpaper, water proof paper, belts, discs etc.

Ceramics
The ceramics (industrial ceramics, super refractories and bio ceramics) business segment contributed 18 per cent of total revenues in 2005-06. The company’s ceramics division manufactures wear resistant and heat resistant products like industrial and capital consumables. This has translated into two product lines.

Industrial ceramics are high alumina ceramic products. These are used as grinding media, wear resistance products, liners and engineered ceramics. Its principal user industries are coal washeries, ceramic tile, power distribution equipment, power generation, cement and fluid handling.

Ceramic materials that are specially developed for use as medical and dental implants are termed bioceramics. They include alumina and zirconia, bioactive glasses, glass ceramics, coatings and composites, hydroxyapatite and resorbable calcium phosphates and radiotherapy glasses.

Super refractories
Refractories are heat resistant and containment products. Super refractories represent high-end grades that can withstand extreme temperatures. The division has two broad product offerings:
Bonded or shaped refractories
Monolithic or powdered range of refractories

The division caters to high temperature applications in the ceramic, non-ferrous, cement, iron and steel, fertiliser, carbon black, glass and chemical processing industries.

Electrominerals
Electrominerals business segment (brown fused alumina grains, white fused alumina grains and silicon carbide grains) supplies a significant portion (nearly 44 per cent during 2005-06) of its production to the abrasives and ceramics business segments. External sales contributed 10 per cent of total revenues in 2005-06. Electrominerals are aluminium oxide / silicon carbide grains. These are the basic raw material for manufacture of abrasives and refractories.
